The northernmost palm tree

A family in Norway has created and managed a tropical garden island in Stavanger that consists of several tropical plant species, otherwise not found in the Nordic nature.

Here's one- that can be called the northernmost palm tree of the world.

This palm tree is located at 59 degrees North, in a private tropical garden named Flor og fjær at the island Sør-Hilde. It is close to Stavanger and can only be visited by boat.

This is an asian species called Trachycarpus fortunei and is very resistant in cold climates. The leaves may get damaged in temperatures below -10 degrees but if it is well fertilized they can recover quite fast. They can do well if they are taken care of during winter by atleast covering their ground.

In these latitudes, such tropical species are usually seen in the green-house. But they can apparently survive out in the open as well. How amazing are those banana leaves!

This has been added to my places-to-go list.
